Regional Eco-development: With Special Reference to the Ganga Plain.
India like many other developing countries of the world is confronting an enormous dilemma. On the one hand, the elimination of poverty of the multiplying masses demands large scale utilization of natural resources, quantum jump and qualitative change in the generation and distribution of energy, large scale manufacturing of a wide variety of industrial products so forth while the very process of increasing the production and productivity entails the deteriorating quality and diminishing quantity of the resources alongside the ever increasing problem of air pollution, water pollution and toxic waste accumulation, causing seriou
s concern on the other. The only way out is the eco-development. Eco development is the approach of environmental management in the intrest of development consistent with ecology. Eco development implies structural transformation of the habitat in harmony of the changing ecological conditions with a view to ensuring a satisfactory quality life to the people, specially the weaker section of the society. It ensures development without destruction, a development that is socially desirable, economically viable and ecologically sound. Eco-development thus covers a whole gamut of phenomena comprising a habitat ranging from the component of environment that constitute the ecological syndrome through the economic activities, to the structure, traditions, values and functioning of the community.
To meet the social needs of the desirable society and ecological conditions of the habiat in specified regions have to be formulated. The time is ripe therefore, for holding an exhaustive discussion to sort out the various issues involved in Ecodevelopment of different regions of the country in regard to the different aspets of the habitat in specified regions have to be formulated. The proposed national seminar has the objective to revisit, examine, scritinizeand analyse the pattern of regional Ecodevelopment. For the achievement of such type of development there is an urgent need to manage physical resources as well as to review the present scenario of development policy and planning, which has been neglected so far, the present seminar is an attempt to resolve some recommendations regarding Regional eco-development which will be an asset for family and policy makers.
